Add to Cart DownloadBINCHE, BELGIUM - FEB-24-2004 - The Carnival of Binche was recently recognized by UNESCO as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity". With roots going back to the Middle Ages, Binche's famed celebration ranks as one of Europe's oldest surviving street carnivals. The carnival culminates on Mardi Gras when the legendary Gille characters make their dramatic appearance. The day starts at 2 a.m. with the Gilles getting dressed in their homes and then parading through the streets collecting followers and stopping at the homes of other Gilles for snacks of raw oysters and champagne, before descending in mass on the town square.
