Add to Cart DownloadBRUSSELS, BELGIUM - JULY-25-2003 - Refugees from Afghanistan, many of which have lived in Belgium for 5 years or more waiting for asylum, were told that they would have to return to Afghanistan. The decision affects about 1,100 refugees. In protest about 400 refugees from all over Belgium have gathered in Saint Croix Catholic church in Brussels and many are on a hunger strike. The Belgian government made a small compromise for the families with children in school saying they could stay until the end of the next school year. Many of these children grew up and Belgium and speak either French or Dutch (Flemish) and have little or no knowledge of their home countries language. The refugees have said that they do not accept this compromise and are refusing to meet with governemnt officials. (PHOTO © JOCK FISTICK)
