Krakelingen Festival
Add to Cart DownloadGeraardsbergen, Belgium - Feb-24-2008 - Roman Catholic Priest Rudy Van Acker, drinks a cocktail of red wine and live fish, during the "Krakelingenfeesten" (Krakelingen festival) in Geraardsbergen, Belgium. Every year in this Flemish village, residents gather for the spring festival, which combines a surreal combination of Pagan and Christian rituals. The towns people parade to the highest point in the village, where "worthies", drink live fish swimming in wine, from a grail served by elders dressed as Druids. The "worthies" then throw biscuits to the crowd. The drinking of the live fish has become a controversial issue, with animal rights activists lobbying to have the traditional practice banned.
