Refugees
Add to Cart DownloadBRUSSELS, BELGIUM - AUGUST-7-2003 - Refugees from Afghanistan, many of which have lived in Belgium for 5 years or more waiting for asylum, were told that they would have to return to Afghanistan. The decision affects about 1,100 refugees. The normal procedure is that the government would review each persons or families case individually, but in this instance the government issued a blanket decision for all the refugees. In protest about 400 refugees from all over Belgium gathered in Saint Croix Catholic church in Brussels on July 23rd and many are on a hunger strike. The Belgian government made a small compromise for the families with children in school saying they could stay until the end of the next school year. Many of these children grew up and Belgium and speak either French or Dutch (Flemish) and have little or no knowledge of their home countries language. After further negotiations the government conceded to review each case individually but the refugees are not satisfied and continue their demonstration. (PHOTO © JOCK FISTICK).
