Herge Museum
Add to Cart DownloadLouvain-la-Neuve, Belgium: Belgium, birthplace of the Smurfs, has a well-documented love of cartoons, and Brussels boasts dozens of cartoon murals and a museum on the subject. But the country's greatest comic export was the globe-trotting Tintin, subject of the new Musée Herge (rue du Labrador 26; 32-10-488-421; www.museeherge.com), named for its author, Georges Remi - aka Herge -- in the nearby town of Louvain-la-Neuve (a 40-minute train trip from Brussels Midi station). Admission to the three-story museum (9.50 euros), opened June 2009, includes an audio-video headset-guided tour that begins with an overview of Herge's life, and winds chronologically through his work from advertising to studio chief overseeing Tintin's empire of strips, books and merchandise. Grab a Tintin book (11.50 euros) in the gift shop for the train ride back. (Photo © Jock Fistick)
